Tahquamenon Falls

We traveled to the small town of Newberry Michigan and stayed at Kritters North Country Campground as home base for seeing some local sites.  Newberry is a small place and there is nothing much in this area but a lot of wide open country.  The drive from Sault Set. Marie on M28 was good but a little boring.  Kritters is a no frills campground with water and electric.  You can read current reviews here RV Park Reviews.  I would stay again if in the area.

We had two objectives in the area with the first being Tahquamenon Falls ( sounds like phenomenon).  Since we had previously purchased the Michigan State Park Passport, there was no charge to get into the park.  The place was packed especially considering it was a weekday so this is a very popular attraction.

The falls are on the Tahquamenon River. There are Upper Falls and  Lower Falls.  We only saw the Upper.  There is an easily manageable paved path about a quarter mile to the falls overlook.

Once you get to the overlook area, you can continue further to a viewing platform which is down about 90 steps to get a great view of the falls crest.

Diane made a couple friends while walking the grounds at the park.

There are several hiking trails in the area including one that goes to the lower falls.  There is also a nice gift shop, a snack bar, and Brewery/Pub.  We had a late lunch at the pub and enjoyed a couple craft beers. This was a good half day trip from our base in Newberry and well worth the drive.
